HIA Hospice, formerly Hospice of the Red River Valley, proudly announces that HIA Heather’s House, its inpatient hospice facility in Fargo, has reached a meaningful milestone: serving more than 200 patients and families since opening in September 2025.
More than 20 years in the making, HIA Heather’s House was created to meet a growing need for compassionate, end-of-life care in the region. As North Dakota’s first freestanding hospice house, the facility offers a peaceful, home-like environment where patients can receive expert hospice care while surrounded by loved ones.
“Reaching this milestone reflects the deep need for this level of care in our communities,” said Tracee Capron, HIA Health Executive Director. “Each patient and family we serve reminds us why Heather’s House exists—to provide comfort, dignity, and compassionate support at life’s most sacred moments.”
Since opening last fall, HIA Heather’s House has served individuals and families from across North Dakota and Minnesota, providing around-the-clock care for patients whose needs cannot be met at home. The hospice house complements HIA Hospice’s in-home services, ensuring patients receive the right level of care wherever they are in their journey.
For one Fargo family, care at HIA Heather’s House brought comfort, clarity, and meaningful time together during a difficult season. With support from the hospice team, their mother’s symptoms were well managed, allowing for connection, conversation, and even a final Christmas together. The care team also supported the family through an additional loss, ensuring their mother could attend her grandson’s funeral.
After her passing, the family expressed deep gratitude for the dignity and compassion she experienced. As shared in a recent HIA Health blog post, their story reflects how hospice care provides not only medical support, but also peace, presence and meaningful moments at the end of life. “As we reflect on serving more than 200 patients and families, we are reminded that hospice care is about living fully in each moment,” added Capron. “We are honored to walk alongside families during these deeply personal experiences.”
