Being Mortal
People often have priorities beyond living longer. How do you help guide your patients who are living with a serious illness? This presentation discusses an inescapable reality of life: death. Participants will watch the Emmy-nominated FRONTLINE documentary “Being Mortal” and join in a conversation on how to take concrete steps to identify and communicate wishes about end-of-life goals and preferences.

Participants in this session will watch portions of the Emmy-nominated FRONTLINE documentary based on Dr. Atul Gawande’s best-selling book, “Being Mortal.” This film explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the doctors, nurses and family members who care for them. After the screening, you will participate in a guided conversation on how to take concrete steps to identify and communicate wishes about end-of-life goals and preferences.

Managing the Final Chapter
This presentation will guide participants to recognize the symptoms of a terminally ill resident. Participants will identify optimal pain medication choices for individuals as they decline, as well as non-pharmacologic comfort measures that provide dignity at the end of life.

This presentation will discuss how the HIA Hospice team can effectively work together with facility staff to provide comfort for patients as they approach end of life and support for their family members, including support for custodial family.

This presentation aims to increase the knowledge of individuals who care for dementia patients, enabling them to provide compassionate care to those living with dementia.

Professional Caregiver Grief/Grief in the Workplace
For many people, their work environment and co-workers may feel like family or community. The death of a co-worker, loved one or resident can profoundly affect the workplace in a variety of ways. When there is loss, the impact on productivity and morale can be significant. Learn practical coping strategies to help employees through grief and loss. This presentation is facilitated by a Hospice of of the Red River Valley grief specialist.
