Together at Home: The Bichler Family’s Journey with HIA Hospice and HIA House Calls

For Joseph and Ann Bichler, every day shared together is a blessing. After more than seven decades of marriage, the couple continues to live side by side with the compassionate support of HIA Hospice, care that allows them to remain together, right where they belong.

Joseph, a proud World War II Veteran, and his wife, Ann, are both receiving care through HIA Hospice. Their journey began with HIA House Calls, when traveling to routine appointments became difficult. “They’d come to the house, make sure I got my medication ordered, and it was just really good for both of us,” Ann said. “We’ve got such good nurses… it’s been a blessing.”

Their daughter Becky, a registered nurse with HIA Health, says that seamless transition from house calls to hospice has made all the difference. “We first turned to HIA House Calls when it became hard for my parents to get out, and as Dad’s health declined, hospice was the next step,” Becky shared. “I think we would all agree as a family that right now my dad probably wouldn’t be alive, and my mom probably wouldn’t be alive either, without hospice care or house calls.”

Annette, one of the Bichlers’ daughters, adds that the experience has changed how she views hospice and palliative care. “It’s not about the end of life, it’s about the quality of life,” she said. “They treat Mom and Dad like family. The care has been very, very good.”

For the Bichlers, the compassionate partnership between HIA Hospice and HIA House Calls has brought peace, reassurance, and time together. “For me, I get to be the daughter,” Becky said. “I can sleep better at night knowing that they have other help available.”

At HIA Hospice, that’s what Hearts In Action means, working together to help families stay close, comfortable, and cared for throughout life’s journey. It’s compassionate, personalized care that keeps couples like Joseph and Ann surrounded by love, dignity, and support.
